The Iraqi Council of Representatives on Saturday elected Nizar Amidi as president of the country. After none of the 16 candidates was able to secure the required majority in the first round, a second round of voting was held. Seventeen candidates competed for the presidency in the first round.

The Iraqi Council of Representatives elected Nizar Amidi as President of Iraq. The Iraqi Council of Representatives held a second round of elections for a new president of the country after none of the 16 candidates managed to obtain a two-thirds majority in the first round of voting, which began on Saturday afternoon. The Iraqi Council of Representatives elected Nizar Amidi as President of the Republic of Iraq during a session it held this Saturday to elect a new president for the country for the next four years. The session was attended by 223 deputies out of a total of 329 members of the Iraqi parliament. In the first round, 17 candidates competed for the position.
