Iraq Returns to World Cup After 40 Years

Iraq's national team defeated Bolivia 2-1 today and secured the last available spot for the FIFA World Cup, returning after a 40-year absence. Bolivia had possession of the ball at the start of the match, but Iraq applied pressure and came close to taking the lead in the 9th minute with a free kick from Amir Alammari, which was saved by Bolivian goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra. A minute later, from a corner kick, Alhamadi capitalized on poor marking and headed the ball to make it 1-0. With the opponent's consent, Bolivia dominated possession, however, they failed to create a threat against a well-organized Iraqi defense. In the final minutes, Bolivia pressured Iraq but lacked the necessary cutting edge and missed the chance to return to a World Cup after 32 years. The second half began with a struggle in midfield. In the 52nd minute, Iraq's coach made substitutions, including the entry of Marko Farji, who seconds later provided a pass to Hussein, who was lethal with a right-footed shot to make it 2-1. Iraq will play in Group I at the World Cup against France, Senegal, and Norway.
