Iraq Elections: The Independent Commission Reveals Details

The Iraq Electoral Commission presented the official results of the municipal council elections that took place in the country in October. According to the results of the voting, the voter turnout level was 15.9 percent, which is the lowest result in the history of elections in Iraq.

Major movements and parties were accused of manipulating and attempting to bribe voters. However, the electoral commission stated that it did not receive any official complaints regarding violations during the elections.

A total of 8,741 members of municipal councils were elected during the elections, with only 1,077 women being elected. This has sparked criticism from human rights organizations, highlighting the insufficient representation of women in Iraqi politics.

The chair of the electoral commission noted that the elections were conducted under challenging conditions due to the pandemic and socio-economic problems in the country, which may have affected the turnout level.
